LINCOLN, Neb. - Four more deer harvested during the 2002 firearm season have tested positive for chronic wasting disease, the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission reported today.
Two adult white-tailed deer, a buck and a doe, harvested in northern Sioux County and an adult mule deer buck harvested in Morrill County came from areas that have had previous positive animals. The fourth positive among the most recent results was an adult white-tailed buck harvested in southwest Kimball County, another area where infection is known to exist, said Bruce Morrison, a Commission biologist.
The findings bring to 11 the number of positive deer harvested in the Panhandle in 2002. More than 2,200 deer taken from the Panhandle have been tested, indicating an infection rate of 0.3 percent, which is considered low, Morrison said. Test results are pending for another 323 deer taken from the Panhandle.
More than 1,500 deer harvested in central and eastern Nebraska have been tested, with no positive results found. |
